The Japanese Lover

After the attacks on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese population was declared an enemy of the state and therefore confined to internment camps in various cities of the USA. Despite these physical barriers, but especially of the social ones, a romance emerges within what seems impossible conditions, due to the circumstances of the time.

From the brilliant mind of Isabel Allende (Eva Luna, The House of Spirits, Of Love and Shadows), comes this fascinating novel that describes the romance between the wealthy Alma Belasco and Ichimei Fukuda, a modest Japanese gardener.

I loved how Allende describes the events in retrospect, taking the modernity of our times as a starting point. Enjoy it!
