Olga Dies Dreaming

Olga, the main character of this peculiar novel, is in the wedding-planning business. But she’s not one of the bunch on this field, she actually has a well-deserved reputation for the celebration of notorious weddings for several celebrities and people who hold great power in New York.

For this reason, her attention to the smallest details when planning banquets, event decorations, hiring musicians, drinks, etc. get rewarded with checks for astronomical figures.

We also read about the life of her brother, Pedro “Prieto” Acevedo, who is a charismatic congressman who represents the interests of the LatinX community in the Brooklyn borough. In his incipient political career, Pedro would have to put his best efforts and the best intentions to achieve favoring said interests, however, that effort is not always applauded by his constituents.

Their mother, Blanca, was in her glorious years an activist for the causes of the underprivileged. One day she would have continued to embrace such causes to the extent of choosing to abandon her family. Over the years, the reunion would awaken in Blanca feelings of rejection for the activities of her children, which she considers frivolous.

But the curious thing about the story is that Olga, who has been key to consummating the loving bond of hundreds of happy couples, cannot find full love in her own life. While that happens, she distracts the feelings of her heart with relationships that do not go beyond passion and that are somehow strategic to promote lucrative opportunities to boost her business.

This is a highly entertaining book, abundant in intriguing stories and with multiple displays of corruption scandals. Sound familiar? For Olga, the “heroine” of this story, it is indeed a “familiar” matter.

For now, you can only enjoy this novel in English, but surely it won’t take long to come out in Spanish.
