In the opinion of experts, this book has in many ways redefined the narrative of the horror genre. The plot takes place in Mexico in the 1950s, in an ancient provincial mansion, founded and inhabited by a family of English origins who have called the property “High Place”.

Noemi Taboada, the protagonist, embarks on a journey to this remote place at the request of her cousin Catalina Taboada, who had recently married the son of the family’s patriarch. Far from being happy about her marriage, Catalina recounts in her letter that the house terrifies her because some type of evil energy emanates from it, which is not only hostile to her, but has also seriously affected her physical and mental health.

Responding to her cousin’s request, Noemi goes to meet her and sees for herself that the mansion inspires fear due to its gloomy condition. But her impact is greater when she meets Catalina who in fact suffers from an illness that forces her to be sedated most of the time.

On top of that, she notices in her cousin’s husband an attitude of coldness in her presence. But this behavior becomes violent with the passing of days, that is the same attitude by the husband’s relatives who cohabit in the residence.

Naomi discovers with horror that the patriarch of the family (who is convalescent due to a serious illness), has exerted a terrible influence on all his descendants, an influence so evil that it reverberates in a paranormal way.

This is a very intense story that invites readers to accompany the protagonist in revealing the evil secrets of “High Place”, a place truly remote… of any logical explanation.
