The Hacienda

It is intriguing that a novel that has given much to talk about, Mexican Gothic (Silvia Moreno-García, USA ©2021) is simply titled Gothic in its Spanish version.

What is not surprising, but rather highly regarded, is the fact that this shocking content has impacted readers so much, to the point that many claim that it has redefined the horror fiction genre.

For this reason, we applaud the fact that this type of narrative has inspired similar expressions of speculative fiction, taking as a framework the history of Latin America, particularly the history of Mexico.

Such is the case of The Hacienda, by Isabel Cañas, which refers to the life of Beatriz, during the times of the recently concluded Mexican war of independence, who would have been left unprotected after the execution of her father.

Thus, the sudden marriage proposal of Don Rodolfo Solórzano is well received, more than as an act of love, but as one of economic subsistence.

Despite the disturbing rumors about the tragic and sudden death of Don Rodolfo’s previous wife, Beatriz looks favorably on coming to live and even direct the destinies of the great house of San Isidro, where she and her new husband would form a great family.

The reality is far from those aspirations because when Don Rodolfo is absent for work reasons, a series of events are triggered that startle the protagonist and make her lose her emotional calm. Unpleasant visions and noises are perceived in the house that can only be described as malignant.

One thing is clear, there is something sinister in the hacienda. Do you have the courage to find out what it is? Will Father Andrés, Beatriz’s only ally, be able to stop the stalking of the evil that surrounds her in her new home?

Chillingly attractive, that’s how this exceptional novel is. Have you read it yet?
