The captain’s daughters

Spain,
© 2019.

Emilio Arenas, a decaying Spanish captain, decides to leave everything behind and look for a better future for himself and his family in New York City in the year 1936.

Once already located in the “Big Apple”, his very unexpected and tragic death leaves his widow and three daughters stranded, far away from their beloved Spain, and without the guidance of their patriarch. In a territory that, due to the abysmal difference in traditions, language, and the great metropolis that is Manhattan, would be extremely inhospitable for them.

Even more intriguing is the fact that the three sisters, Victoria, Mona and Luz, would lack all kinds of experience in terms of trades that would help them make ends meet. Their dream of aspiring to a great fortune in America is now unreachable, and rather they face a desperate need to overcome their crisis on a day-by-day basis.

Faced with this great dilemma, the Arenas sisters would have to be extremely courageous to make their way into this society so alien to them. This sparks in them unknown personalities, even for the protagonists, to find ways to bring bread to the table. For better or for worse, they will be exposed to different (and very opposite) work environments: in family businesses (some legitimate, others not so much), in nightclubs, taking care of patients, etc.

The brilliant writer, Maria Dueñas, recognized for her worldwide best-seller “The time in between” gives us this chronicle that, among other things, accounts for the huge Spanish immigration phenomenon in the United States, around the 1930s.

This is another great novel by Maria Dueñas, you don’t want to miss it!
